Pregnant – and now? Orientation from the first moment
There they are, quite clearly: Two pink lines on the pregnancy test in Rahel’s hand. It’s not unplanned. And yet Rahel is overwhelmed. Joy, uncertainty and many questions are suddenly close together – and the desire for orientation grows.
At the first appointment, her gynecologist confirms the pregnancy. Together, they discuss preventive examinations, ultrasound examinations and the next steps. At home, Rahel realizes that being well informed gives security.
But one question remains: What exactly does basic insurance cover? And is supplementary insurance worthwhile?
Maternity and health insurance in Switzerland

Basic insurance: All medically necessary benefits during pregnancy and childbirth are covered without co-payment. These include but are not limited to:
- medical support before, during and after birth
- Preventive examinations
- Ultrasound examinations
- Blood tests
- Birth in a hospital or maternity home
Medically necessary breastfeeding advice
Supplementary insurance: Depend on the supplementary insurance chosen, SWICA pays for additional benefits. These include, for example, birth preparation courses or preventive services such as breathing and relaxation techniques as well as pregnancy gymnastics. For more comfort, such as a single room and free choice of doctor in the hospital, supplementary hospital insurances from semi-private to private around the world are available.
Important to know: The supplementary hospital insurances have a waiting period of 360 days for maternity benefits.

It strengthens the immune and defence systems and reduces the risk of various diseases – both in the baby and in the mother.
